This Is Art celebrates one year anniversary with international mail art show

Montreal, Monday, May 2nd , 2011——— In the 21st Century digital age, mail art is experiencing resurgence. This is Art, a mail art project headed by Montreal-based artist Kiera Pannell is celebrating its one-year anniversary with Canada’s latest international mail art show. The public is invited to attend the opening on May 21st from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Culture and Language Connexions in NDG and learn about this collaborative, discursive arts medium.

The exhibition features more than 200 pieces submitted by 120 artists from over two dozen countries, in answer to an international call disseminated this past winter. Works range from drawing to painting, from collage to embroidery and from sculptural to textual all making their way to Montreal via the post.

Artists include Canada’s favourite Anna Banana, internationally renowned performance artist and founder of Vile magazine, who has exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Spacex Gallery in London, amongst others. Also showcased are works by mail art pioneer Ryosuke Cohen whose projects have been running continuously for over thirty years. Montreal’s own homegrown, cartoonist Kurt Beaulieu and illustrator, entrepreneur and curator Billy Maveras (Monastiraki) also offer up some their own mail art interpretations. Some of the Canadian artists will be in attendance to discuss their inspiration, approach and interpretation of the theme language and culture.

“This show allows people to experience both fine and lowbrow art simultaneously while tracing international dialogues and artistic trends from culture to culture,” says curator Kiera Pannell.

Popularized in the 60s along with the DADA movement, mail art is a worldwide phenomenon of visual arts gone postal. The genre fosters personal and tangible communication in a cyber-ephemeral world and opens up a place for dialogue between both established fine artists as well as self-taught enthusiasts.
